Westbound Interstate 70 was closed for hours after two semis crashed Friday morning.

VAIL, Colo. — Westbound Interstate 70 was closed for hours due to a semi-truck crash Friday morning.

The Vail Police Department said westbound I-70 was closed at mile marker 178 around 7 a.m. Friday. 

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) tweeted that westbound I-70 was closed between Exit 195 (Copper Mountain) and Exit 176 (Vail). Westbound traffic was forced to detour onto Colorado Highway 91 and U.S. Highway 24 as an alternate route.

Vail Police said the highway was reopened around 12:20 p.m.

According to police, one of the semis was parked on the shoulder of the interstate when a second semi hauling two trailers collided with it.

Neither of the vehicles were carrying any dangerous or hazardous materials, police said, but there was a small diesel spill that Vail Fire cleaned up. 

Police said the driver and passenger of the parked semi were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the other semi, a 49-year-old Grand Junction man, was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He was charged with careless driving causing injury, according to police.
